News  Golf Classic Drives $100K into arts center’s green

Blue skies and a soft breeze welcomed participants of the sixth annual Walton Arts Center Golf Classic, which took place Monday at the Pinnacle Country Club. A reception and awards ceremony followed in the clubhouse.

The team from Athletic World Advertising – Danny White, Matt Hewitt, Gregg Ogden and Jim von Gremp – took first-place honors. Prizes were also given for closet to the pin, longest drive and longest putt; the evening’s events were sponsored by Tom and Cynthia Coughlin.

Nearly three dozen teams took part in a four-man scramble, raising approximately $100,000 for the arts center, Missy Kincaid, vice president for development for the Walton Arts Center, said the gold classic is one of the center’s largest fund-raisers.

Without such events, it would be difficult to bring in large Broadway shows such as Les Miserables (scheduled for next May) and support the educational programs offered to area schools.

“It’s because of events like this that our programs can be as strong as they are,” Kincaid said.

Pinnacle provided the fare, which included smoke tomato bisque, grilled vegetables, jerk-rubbed mahi mahi with pineapple salsa, mango barbecued chicken breast, sweet potato mash and key lime pie.
